Tantor, a nice Xmas present, isn’t it? - Fonera 2.0 Official Firmware Release!
That’s the name of the first official stable release for the Fonera 2.0: Tantor the Elefont. Why, because Tantor is a rock solid firmware; like an elephant, taking steps with no obstacle that will stop it.

We’ve added nice features, fixed most of the known bugs (not all, sorry) and set it ready to accept the nice coming plugins. We will take a short break for Xmas, we deserve it, believe me, and then will come back with great surprises. Because Tantor is our Santa present but in Spain, we also celebrate the coming of the Three Wise Men the 6th of December, so expect new nice things by then.
Back to Tantor the Elefont. This is what we added:
- New interface for developers! Yes, we changed the look and feel a bit. Guys, you’re developers, not normal users, you need some distinction, don’t you? Check the new colours, ain’t them cool? And what’s that new image in the top left corner? Just for developers ;)
- Translations and Automatic Language Detection. A small change that helps a lot! Our firmware comes out of the box with Spanish, English, French, German, Italian and… Basque! LOL!! Sorry, I needed a small wink to my mother language ;) Want to see it in other languages? Download the translation files from the svn and do the work! We will soon list what files need translation on the fonosfera wiki.
- Sell passes, videos etc. Older versions (this was fixed in RC1) had problems with the whitelisting of some domains and not everything was working on the public side. Thanks for your reports!
- New services added to the firewall for WAN access: you can now add ssh and web access from WAN. Now, forward the correct port of your broadband router to your fonera 2.0 and you can have full access to it from the Internet!
- ssh access enabled by default: this is only for developers as well. You guys can’t complain!
- Full integration with fon.com. The fonera 2.0 can now be considered a fully functional fonera! You can manage your SSID, passwrod etc from fon.com. Only the bandwidth limitation is not working but will be fixed very soon, don’t panic! Anyway, why limit how much you share? ;D
- We made tons of bugfixes as well, but why bother you listing them? You can check them on http://trac.fonosfera.org/fon-ng/ if you are interested.
Trantor is not perfect, sure not. We have some bugs open:
- *Ssh in Developer mode only works after rebooting* (I’m sure many will ask about this)
- Setting the bandwidth limitation from fon.com is not working yet (this is a server problem, not Trantor’s ;D)
- Then Wi-Fi Wan mode work just fine but, when you’re connecting the Fonera 2.0 to another Fonera 2.0, you need to reboot after saving the changes. Not big deal, huh? How many of you have 2 Foneras 2.0? ;)
- Samba access from WAN is not working. We couldn’t find why… too busy with other stuff. If you know why, let us know, if not, we will fix it soon! Promised!
- Undetected bugs! (Ehr… yes, we have some, for sure, hehehe)
- USB 1.1 devices still don’t work when connected directly to the Fonera 2.0 (not only that remember that plugin a USB 1.1 device or a full speed USB 2.0 device will block the USB port and you will need to reboot it). REMEMBER to use a USB 2.0 HUB between these devices and the Fonera 2.0, sorry. Well… we all want to plug more than one device on it so, why sorry? hehehe.
And what does this release mean?
So, this is it. Our new baby: solid, stable and usable. It’s the first release of a surely different generation of foneras. We already have open projects to support Bluetooth dongles (with even Internet connectivity through Bluetooth), home automation modules, jamendo (the Creative Commons music station), advanced firewall controls, Vuze (the superstar of the plugins… you’re gonna love this!), a youTube video uploader (we’re making an impressive interface for this too) etc.
Enjoy your Christmas present, have a nice time with your families (not too much hacking these days, OK? :P) and start well the new year. This is gonna be the fon-ng year!!!!

What about torrent or amule client?
December 22nd, 2008 at 6:33 pm
Garret… will come… things don’t happen by magic ;)
Stay tuned, you’ll be greatly surprised
December 22nd, 2008 at 6:50 pm
Three wise men to come on December 6th? You probably meant January 6th?
December 22nd, 2008 at 7:30 pm
But when fonera 2.0 will replace the current fonera “1.0″ now that the firmare is stable?
December 22nd, 2008 at 7:40 pm
so only very hot air, as usual, coming from Varsavsky - land. In fact “LF 2.0″ is a functional clone of “LF 1.0″, adding some PR TAM-TAM. Nothing else. Guys, when do you realize all this? Open the windows and let the hot air get out and fresh air come in.
No torrent in 2008 , no torrent in 2007 - 2004, cause FON has been founded as a WIMAX company in 2004, as actor, illusionist and talker MV told the world for years.
You should be ashamed, really!
FON spots are shrinking meanwhile, day by day!
merry christmas

it’s 6th of January, not December.
when fonera 2.0 (with faster writing to flash) will be publicly available?

It is great!
The upgrade was without any hitch.

December 23rd, 2008 at 9:47 am
Sweet!! My band’s in Jamendo.. maybe i’ll get some extra promo :-)
December 23rd, 2008 at 2:23 pm
Sure, it’s Jan 6th :)
Three Kings: hopefully soon now that we’re done with the firmware base. We will now define how to make it a product (what plugins should therre be in by default) and we’re done!

Octogenraio. Seems like you’re using the wrong file for your version.
Please check the specs written on the side of each image type. If they’re wrong or can do it yet, use the first one. That one works perfectly
cheers

Thanks iurgi but:
Firmware Version: 2.1.0.2, so should be the .fon image, don’t you?
Also tried with the .image and doesn’t work.
:(
December 23rd, 2008 at 10:03 pm
Hi octoghenario:
sorry, I didn’t specify. The .image always works but you need to install it via the command line of the fonera- Try connecting to it using ssh from linux. In windows you need to install PuTTy, google for it.
Once in the fonera try this:
cd /tmp
wget URL-of-the-.image
mtd -r write name_of_the_image image

Congratulations on the first stable firmware release! I’m looking forward to seeing it’s commercial debut!
I’ve been watching this blog with great interest. I’m not a programmer, but I have a couple of ideas I hope someone will adopt and develop:
1) Instead of developing many different drivers for the USB port, perhaps a more efficient solution would be to implement a virtual USB port server. This has the potential to provide almost universal compatibility right out of the box. A quick Google search shows that many people have succeeded in doing this, and there are even Linux-based open source projects that might port easily. The idea is that the real USB port on La Fonera 2 would be installed as a “phantom” USB port on your PC elsewhere. The router would have a simple IP whitelist in the web interface. The PC would be in charge of supplying the drivers for any devices “attached” to it. This could include instrument packages (muni utilities, weather, smog), traffic/security webcams, USB-Ethernet adapters or even USB modems!
2) Has anyone had luck getting a VPN server running on La Fonera 2? This service would be an option for Aliens and roaming Foneros, so that their wifi is encrypted… Fon would distribute a VPN client with built-in connection helper. “FonSafe”(?) Additionally, an Alien or Fonero who cannot find a Fon hotspot, could use the same connection helper to VPN his connection through any hotspot in the world! Fon could then sell day-passes even where Fon routers had not yet been deployed! Passes would activate the day they are first used, or Fon could learn to bill by the minute. Foneros could have a mode where their VPN leads to their own home LAN, and Fon could create members-only VPNs for a private Internet, including a private bittorrent tracker to distribute firmware updates router-to-router. Fon hotspots which are out of wifi range of customers could be put back into profitable use as proxies this way. Of course, this would be something wonderful to add to the firmwares of older router models. ;)
I hope i’ve gotten some mental gears turning. Remember, nothing is impossible if you’re motivated!
Harried Giftmas, everyone!

“not only that remember that plugin a USB 1.1 device or a full speed USB 2.0 device will block the USB port and you will need to reboot it”
Does it mean the USB port isn’t plug & play?
Anyway good job :)
It would be useful to have a compatibility list for 3G USB keys.. plus the ability to stream the webcam video from the public ip address. I read somewhere that it works only from internal lan network cause it lacks a open rule to the firewall, is it right?

Hi.
The latest firmware runs with UMTS extent quite well.
But there is a problem if you have a subnet in the private network wants to use.
There will always be a / 24 set.
Continue the Fonera 2.0 reboots every 1-2
Days. Mostly, as far as I could determine,
if the new UMTS modem must reserve (I use one of the Fonera’s in the car).
It would be ideal if the location of the syslog
e.g. on a USB stick could be saved, then the same applies to evaluate them.
Otherwise, very fine thing, and already my third Fon, which I use (private, company
and automotive / mobile).
Greeting,
thw

Hi Fon team! Just a simple questión:
From now on, now that we have an official release on our Fonera 2.0 routers, can we expect the fonera to get all forthcoming firmware updates by itself with no more flashing procedures just like fonera 1.0 does?
Thanks and eager to test those pluggins.

where is bit-torrent..¿??? how can active..???
January 7th, 2009 at 4:12 pm
Hi all
AustinTx: I’m very glad to see you like the new device/firmware. Your ideas are very good and we already had in mind some of them. We will soon have something related to show.
Juliana, that command takes about 20min. You should have waited longer. Does it work now or is it broken? Does it boot normally? I suggest you connect to the irc channel #fonosfera on irc.freenode.net
agentsmith: no, it means usb 1.1 is broken unless you use a 2.0 usb hub. USB 2.0 is totally plug and play.
thw: couldn’t reproduce that, if you can get more info/debug, it will be helpful. Maybe it depends on the umts device? what model are you using?
aid85: it’s correct, works for me (and the rest)
Ben10: yes, as soon as we make the final release for consumer end.
pepe: not available yet, will come soon ;)

Thank you Iurgi for the reply.
I succesfully tested the Huawei E160G which is really cheap, 69 euros and it’s unlocked.
What 3G modem and webcams did you test?
UVC compatibility list is rather old. I went to the shop and the only webcam that matches is the Logitech Quickcam Sphere AF which is really high-end (over 100 euros). The other ones are brand-new models not in list.
Are supported its advanced features (2MP sensor, motorized tracking, autofocus)?
January 7th, 2009 at 9:18 pm
I’ve attached 2 printers but fonera2 has recognized only one. It is a bug? otherwise if i attach only one of those it works but not togheter.
January 8th, 2009 at 10:12 am
Thanks for your reply Iurgi. I look forward to the new releases.

I’m getting the message “java.net.ConnectException: Connection refused: connect” when trying to connect to my usb camera philips SPC 620NC, which is connected to an usb hub.
Any ideas about this problem?
TIA

Daniel: No they are for the La Fonera 2.0
andyvalval: Do you get that error when you try to watch the webcam from the dashboard?
Please reply in mailing list (link on your right) that’s better for support than blog comments.
January 13th, 2009 at 4:15 pm
Inouk: Yes, that message appear when I try to connect from the dashboard

Hello,
A “non-beta” version of the firmware has been released, but the fonera 2 sold on Shop.Fon.com is still called “beta”, so does this mean that it is the hardware that is now considered “beta” ?
Are there any hardware changes contemplated before a non-beta fonera 2 starts to be sold on Shop.Fon.com ?
Thanks in advance
January 16th, 2009 at 1:38 pm
If you ask to fon support team they answers to you that THERE IS NO HARDWARE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN FONERA2.0 beta or non-beta
January 19th, 2009 at 8:16 pm
strange… there are no new posts or new abilities for a version to come… not even mentioning the release date…
