New Release Candidate (2.2.6.0 RC1)

Hi all,

We are very happy to release a new RC firmware: 2.2.6.0 RC1 (the firmware will show still 2.2.5.0). We want to make clear that it is NOT a final/official firmware but an image for testing. We release it and those who dare and don’t mind having to reflash or revert it if it’s not working properly can install it and give us feedback and congratulate us for the good job. Please, no complains, it’s not a release.

Having said that, I want to thank Decodecoding for theĀ  very exhaustive and helpful testing, debugging and reporting he has done. Thanks to him we might have found a good alternative for the buggy torrent. Yes, we have replaced our old torrent application, ctorrent with a new one “unworkable” – nice name huh? – But that’s not all, here’s the list of the features we added.

  • We added nmbd: this will basically make the fonera discoverable on your network… Both Windows and MAC will see the Fonera as a network computer by browsing your network.
  • Support for mDNS: this helps MAC and Linux discover the services a Fonera is offering (FTP, Network Disc etc) we will add more services in the future, such as printer etc. With this, things are much more easy to configure in most systems.
  • Replaced torrent: now we use “unworkable”. The interface is not fully migrated, but it will be soon. Seems to work pretty well. You can chose 3 speeds… if the high speed gives you trouble, try lower ones.
  • UPnP support: yes… we added this after so long. For us it’s a security whole but some users want it… IMPORTANT: it’s enabled by default in this image and can’t be disabled from the Web GUI. Will add that feature in coming releases. For those who don’t know UPnP, it dinamically ‘opens’ the ports of the services you are using (namely torrent, gaming etc)
  • Uptime: the dashboard now shows the uptime of the fonera. This is only refreshed when you refresh the dashboard, don’t expect it to change synchronously.
  • DDNS behind NAT: we added a script that will check the public IP of the fonera even behind NAT (this is the case for 99% of the foneras connected behind a cable/adsl router).
  • RapidShare and Megaupload fixed and improved: RapidShare downloader had a bug that made some files not be downloaded. Additionally, adding too many links in a row while it was downloading others made the fonera crash from time to time. This is handled in a different way now and should not crash anymore. Please test it.
  • Many fixes on the interface, facebook and other applications…

Please all comments to the development list or additionally IRC (#fonosfera on irc.freenode.net).

I had a problem with the Facebook app. When I tried to grant access on Fbook to the uploader it said that there was some kind of bug in the app and it couldn’t continue giving access.

  4. Kyros Says:

    How about SSH access?
You didn’t offer two versions anymore –> SSH enabling option is included in this one?

  5. steven Says:

@Kyros : normally RC candidates are “developer” versions incl ssh access

  6. Mario Says:

Mode Internet wifi not working for me.
You can look other programs for torrents as rtorrent or torrentflux.
I have used these programs on NSLU2 (Nslug http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/NSLU2) which is also a device with low memory and working correctly, there are many packages and applications for openwrt on this machine.

I would like to know who is connect to my fonera!
    I mean the mac address!
Would it be possible to add this feature?

  9. David Says:

It would be nice to have a torrent downloader with scheduling, just like the download application. I only want my torrents to use bandwidth at night (up and down), due to the 50% accounting between 12 o’clock and 7.

  10. Marc Says:

Hi, this version is very more stable than 2.2.5.0 RC1. With that I’ve had very instable WLAN access from one of my PCs. But this version runs stable again (as all previous versions).
    Thanks, Marc

  12. Ernest Says:

Had also a problem with Torrent downloading. After 2 attempts noticed that it was the torrent app crashing my fonera.

  13. mbirton Says:

The new nonworkable torrent is non workable :) It’s not downloading anything, pauses the torrent after the hash. Restart does not help, pauses again.

  14. will Says:

how about adding support for: http://sven.killig.de/openwrt/slugterm_dl.html

  15. Vieira Says:

As Alan and mbirton already said the nonworkable client didn’t solve any of the problems I was having with ctorrent… there are still frequent crashes…

could be possible to use a mobile as 3G modem? , I use a Nokia N73 as modem with my netbook (Ubuntu 9.04) using wdial. It would be a fantastis feature for the fonera.

  18. rotrin Says:

UPnP it is great, but… does it works with XBOX 360? I mean, if I connect a HDD to Fonera 2.0 should be works? how? because I tried and it was impossible.

    thanks for your help
