Just to keep you updated

Hi all

There’s been a loooooong inactivity in the blog. We’ve been working on very cool fixes and improvements for the fonera that you will soon be able to test. I just wanted to send you this message so you get ready for the news ;)

Sooner than later we will make another release candidate and this time it will be the good one. We expect 2.2.6.0 to be a very stable and improved firmware!

Please stay tuned ;)
PS: there’s no bridge functionality yet…

better later then sooner, it’s the last chance before people starting sell their F2s on eBay for 10$ shipping included ;-)

  2. iurgi Says:

    LOL :)
yeah, I hope this time we meet at least some people’s expectations with the torrent application

  3. Alessandro Says:

Now, I ‘ve buy fonera 2.0 and I’ve received only delusion!I’m afraid… FOR NOW!

  4. Damym Says:

No bridge? WHY there isn’t bridge yet?
I can’t understand why it’s too difficult. The standard Fonera with Freewlan or DD-WRT can work in bridge mode. Why it can’t be the same for Fonera2?

    (crying)

    :’(

  5. pm2036 Says:

@Damym: If it’s so easy to made, do it yourself :P
Yes, you can cry another time….

Is it a problem for you if it’s not on the top of the todolist?

  6. Kyros Says:

    Hi Damym,

Yes the Classic La Fonera with DD-WRT can do te bridge function because after new flashing the use a newer OpenWRT version than the Classic La Fonera -> FreeWLAN addons use the original version so only bridging of LAN and MyPlace is possible in QRM mode.

    But you are right:
Complete bridging capabilities for La Fonera 2 are very desired. Thus it would be possible to include the router into an existing private LAN without firewall or subnet creating. This would mean using the foreign LAN’s DHCP to provide all the IPs for La Fonera 2.0’s connected private network client devices. So only the public FON Wifi would need an own DHCP and firewalling.

    Regards, Kyros

  7. Damym Says:

    Kyros,

I understand that the Fonera network architecture is a bit complicated. But also if I use spare OpenWRT I can’t bridge interfaces: the Fonera locks itself and needs a new flash (or a serial cable :-)) .
I think the problem is that the Fonera 2 has got 2 ethernet ports. So, if I am right, the problem should exist also for Fonera+…
    Anyone confirms?

    (sorry for my english :D)

  8. iurgi Says:

the biggest problem is not technical but purely usability related.
how do you let the user know the IP the fonera is on when in bridged mode?

it could be doable if you use a static IP configuration on the fonera so you always know how to reach it. but if you set dhcp client in the fonera, you will never know how to reach it again.

plus, when you are configuring it, when you switch from normal to bridged mode, you will lose connectivity and need to reconfigure the interface of the PC to the new network (that from the WAN) and this is again confusing.

When we’re done with stabilizing the fonera and torrents etc. we will try to have a usable solution, at least in developer mode

  9. Austintx Says:

iurgi: If i wanted to know the IP which the Fonera was on, and didn’t have tools upstream to monitor DHCP logging… my first impulse would be to check it’s status in UserZone. When reconfigured, La Fonera should obviously send a fresh report of it’s interfaces and their relationships there for exactly this purpose. Since Fon does not provide this service, it’s really an issue of the quality of Fon’s technical support for it after all.

  10. iurgi Says:

    Hi AustinTx,
long time no see. how are things?

well, I don’t expect end users to have monitoring tools for the network and not even advanced users to spend time on that.

As for sending this info to FON, well I see big points in having upstream notifications of the fonera status to fon.com but this specific case is certainly not one that would make me implement this funcitonality. I don’t think the fonera should ‘obviously’ send this information to fon.

If you just wanted to take the chance to critizise fon’s technical support again, be it: you’re free to complain as much as you want. I certainly find the suggestions unuseful and out of the basket.

Anyway, thanks for the always accompanied with a critic feedback. Just adds more to the unreliability of your comments.

  11. Austintx Says:

I don’t wish to sound contrary, but it’s a safe bet that many end users have La Fonera plugged into their original wired routers, or modem/router combos. These usually provide logs showing which MAC has which LAN IP.

I am, by profession, a problem-solver and a solution-provider. I read your written opinion that bridge could not be implemented, and that it was for reasons that were not the fault of Fon’s apt programmers. I invest a great degree of confidence in Fon’s capabilities. Through a rational, technical redefinition of the problem, I saw a promising new solution, and freely provided it. I’m sorry you feel that my UserZone solution is not compatible with Fon’s interests at this time.

Thank you for your encouragement- I will continue to contribute in any small or large way that I can.

  12. Pelikano Says:

If the “problem” is purely usability related the solution is very simple and commonly used. Detect during the boot sequence if the wired port is connected, if not: start wireless. So if the router is not working properly and the user is not able to access by my_place, connect by wire and reboot. The router will be accessible by the wired network. This concept is used by my wireless cameras(Axis and EdiMax)

  13. iurgi Says:

    Dear Autintx,

I know more than I wish about your profession. For some reason you always tell around about it. In any case you might invest some time in reading and comprehension activities: “When we’re done with stabilizing the fonera and torrents etc. we will try to have a usable solution, at least in developer mode” as far as I can understand means “we will try to find a usable solution” and this is not what you understood: “I read your written opinion that bridge could not be implemented”. Did I ever say that? WOW :)

I don’t like much relying on what “their original routers” do or asking the users to check for something that might be or might not be there.

Anyway, as I said, we will invest some time on it and try to come with a usable solution.

Thanks for your superprofessional opinion ;) it’s certainly more appreciated than a “fon sucks”

  14. torrentman Says:

iurgi, torrents will seed ? how many in parallel ?

  15. FON sucks Says:

    FON sucks ! Of course!

  16. salva Says:

Is posible subscribe to BitTorrent RSS feeds?
I think this could be a very useful feature but I don´t know how easy this is.

  17. drax2gma Says:

    Hi Guys,

the usb2.0 port speed problem will also get some attention in the upcoming firmware release? I hope so, as I see this is a critical issue, probably not related to hardware.

    Keep up the good work,
    Mark

  18. Nuno Dias Says:

Nice to read about the news !
Will the torrent application have the possibility of specifying a limit to both the bandwidth and the number of connections (to improve stability) ?

  19. Ivan Says:

Does new torrent client implements DHT (Distributed Hash Table)?

  20. AustinTX Says:

I guess I don’t understand your defensive tone of voice at all. Considering your successes, and Fon’s reputation, I would anticipate more confidence. You needn’t feel threatened by an unanticipated outside opinion.

  21. tex83rb Says:

    I’d like to have:

-fixes for rapidshare and megaupload that in RC2 2.2.6.0 aren’t working

    - bridging capabilities through wifi with existing access point on LAN (with wpa-psk and tkip and aes support) : so I could put fonera to download with only A/C cable connected!

  22. barbon Says:

    yea:
-megaupload, torrent, download work bad, because if fon crash or internet disconect download will dont recovery the files.
    -too much crash
    -bridge mode missing
-select to disable/enable public fon signal (so maybe this correct the bridge feature) (wtf i need a pubblic signal in a isolated zone?????)
    -bla bla bla
    -more bla bla bla
Generaly for now, is best the fonera 1 with ddw firmware, because fonera 2 is still in deveploment and we need to teach and fix this like an baby, need times and times wait and see :)

  23. Yagüe Says:

Yesterday I say “I love you”, but after trying it I say… I LOVE YOU MORE xD

Now torrent work perfectly, I was testing it and I didn’t have any problem.
The only issue was that when I installed the new software, UPnP was dissabled and my internet wasn’t working. But I enabled it and then it worked fine.
