Flipper is your friend!

Tuesday, April 21st, 2009

Hi all freaks!

We’ve got a new animal in our very own personal zoo: Flipper! < -- Check it, it's fun!

And here is the last pic you took of it:

Flipper the Dolphin
As you can see it’s a Dolphin (yeah, I know you guessed by the name, smartass!) and is here to help you and play with you. Flipper does already include all the features we want in the Fonera 2.0 (for now :D). Here is the list of the new features compared to old good Platero:

  • Facebook Uploader: wanna share the pics of the weekend with all your mates? Put them in a pendrive, “facebook” folder and plug it in the Fonera 2.0. Everybody will see you drunk! (No, no, calm down. All the pics and videos are always uploaded in PRIVATE mode :D)
  • Flickr Uploader and Picasa Uploader were already added in the Release Candidates.
  • Install new versions from the Applications menu! From now on, a single click will separate your Fonera 2.0 from the next firmware… no need to visit blog.fonosfera.org anymore :( But please, come back or we will be sad!
  • Nintendo DS works.
  • Freed space for more plugins! We now have 1,5MB instead of 1,19MB :)
  • Samba and FONBackup have a separated firewall option.
  • Fixed IE visualization of the Wizard (yes, IE users, now it works… dunno why we fixed it though, lol).
  • Fixed Torrent crashing problem with files that have many seeds.
  • Torrent downloader now lets you chose the port and will be automatically opened on the firewall.
  • The partitions on multi-partition disks can be now labeled as well.
  • Polish has been added (thanks Łukasz!).
  • You can now assign static DHCP leases and domain names inside your local network.
  • 3G connectivity reworked: a long list of providers is preloaded so you need not to configure any value.
  • And many more things… if you’re interested, check previous posts. I’m not writing all we did again :D

Bugs: yeah… as always. We will fix them, please report them!

Once again, and after having released the HW to the public, thanks to all involved! Martin, Jordi, John, Pablo, Javi, Steven, Alex etc etc etc etc etc etc etc (yeah, lots of people :D)

RC2 is here and is better than RC1

Tuesday, April 7th, 2009

Your feedback was so useful and that’s why we’re releasing fon-ng 2.2.5.0 RC2. It’s gonna be, very likely, the last release candidate. But this time we want to make sure it works as good as it can, because the Endusers are coming! yes, Arpil 21st is the date!

This is the bugfix / new features list:

  • Facebook uploader is here! You can now add as many pictures as you want to facebook. I used it 2 and I’m already the biggest image uploader of all my friends!
  •  Picasa uploader fixed! it used to crash with many pictures to upload. Not any more!
  • Static DHCP leases…
  • All icons are now alligned and look better :P We also like design ;)
  • 3G connectivity has been reworked and has more options now.
  • Picasa and Youtube applications now check your password and let you know if it’s wrong
  • The FONBackup page has been redesigned. Now you can browse the content of your backup to make sure it’s all in there!
  • The password bug has been fixed, yes.
  • Added nice icons on the File browser to directly upload pictures and videos to picasa, flickr, facebook and youtube. Nice hack
  • WiFi-WAN now works better. It didn’t work with some routers before…

Give us any feedback you can think of: we’re happy to get more than we need and filter it ;)

We hope you enjoy this image during easter!

P.S.: once again, thanks to all the team, especially John ;)

Hi Betatesters! 2.2.5.0 rc1 is here

Tuesday, March 31st, 2009

Yes, we are faster and faster! This is just a release candidate launch, we want you to test all the bugs you reported and let us know if they’ve been fixed. But John, almighty John, has been busy with new stuff too!

(sorry, no pic this time, it’s not a release, hehe ;))

BIG DISCLAIMER: even thought the configuration wizard tells you to use a password of more than 8 characters, IGNORE IT. It has a bug so use a password of 7 chars MAX!
This is the bugfix and new feature list. Test and report, my friends:

  • Added flickr functionality: works as the youtube one. Put pictures on the pendrive on a “flickr” folder and they’re uploaded when plugged!
  • Added picasa functionality: exactly the same way but on a “picasa” folder.
  • Nintendo DS now works fine with this firmware!!! (more than one will be happy in Japan…).
  • And more I can’t remember right now :)

And this is the missing bits:

  • Translations for all new stuff are not ready yet.
  • And more I can’t remember right now :) LOL

The ugly earthy Mr. Caterpillar mutated into a beautyful and joyful flying butterfly

Tuesday, February 17th, 2009

This is the beautiful story of a firmware that was slow, dumb, unfriendly and weak, like a Caterpillar… and one day, after months of metamorphosis from the very inside… It became a powerful, lightweight and flexible firmware, ready to discover and astonish the world with it’s beautiful wings!

This is the release of Mr. Caterpillar (version 2.2.3.0), the firmware that finally is mature enough to be considered as a final user product.

Mr. Caterpillar

We have made some nice additions and some changes on the available plugins. Here you have the list:

  • The plugins can be installed directly from the console! Yes, you don’t need to go anywhere else… every new plugin will be put in the repository and the fonera will show you all available plugins. It will also let you know if one of the installed plugins has a new version available. In the future… maybe plugin ranking/popularity? We’ll see…
  • We merged the FONBackup and FTP tabs. They are basically the same since the backup is done using FTP. The PC application (available for Windows, Linux and Mac) is getting very nice features, we might release another beta soon… Muuuuuch faster! Btw, try it on the cable instead of WiFi you get up to 2MB/s transfer! That’s not bad!
  • Printer and Webcam plugins have been removed!!! WHY? will some ask… well, they take space (not much, OK) and they are not usable for everybody. You need it? Why don’t you try the new plugin installation system? They are already there for you! Install the one you need. The way it works hasn’t changed at all :D
  • A nice link in the left-bottom box, on the Version number will show you the version and animal of your Fonera. Handy to know what you have installed without being an expert ;)
  • Catalàs, benvinguts!!! We’ve added new languages: find the interface in Catalan and Simplified Chinese. More to come! We don’t want to leave anyone apart.

So please, everybody install it and let us know if you like it.find below, the firmware for developers, the firmware for non-developers (no ssh so don’t use it if you need it – we will soon enable fon.com to ‘switch to developer mode’ with a single click), the failsafe firmware and the FONbackup application – it is a new release… much faster and reliable. Try it!

  • Caterpillar DEVELOPERS FON file (web interface Tantor or later): download.
  • Caterpillar DEVELOPERS image: download. MD5Sum: 8526415082a2fe0cebc8a73d73e26edd
  • Caterpillar END USER FON file (web interface Tantor or later): download. (please don’t use this if you want ssh enabled)
  • Caterpillar END USER image: download. MD5Sum: 8d9620d274ad8f35a073c6c5d868a5f8 (please don’t use this if you want ssh enabled)
  • Fonera 2.0 failsafe (versionless): download. MD5Sum: d29e07bdcb6df04209cafafce8f3bc5f
  • FONBackup 0.2 (only for use with Mr. Caterpillar): download.

Once again, thanks to all the collaborators (translators: chihchun, victor and albert, bmpeter, merlin, Michelangelo, blogic, inouk…) and specially to the firmware team, which we’re very proud of!!

Where’s that sound coming from? Geez! it’s a Fonera 2.0!

Tuesday, February 3rd, 2009

Beethoven is playing a nice piano sonata somewhere he would have never expected! The Fonera 2.0 keeps growing and showing new abilities: now it’s a jukebox!

What do you need?

  • Fonera 2.0
  • USB 2.0 HUB
  • Cheap USB audio card – or any similar model (the cheaper the better: they don’t lack quality)
  • USB hard drive or Pendrive
  • Speakers
  • mp3 music

What do you get? A device able to play your music. either single songs, full directories or m3u playlists (yes, we used a standard) from your hard drive. You can let it playing and turn off your laptop.

Here you have a screenshot :)

Audiocli the audio player in the Fonera 2.0
This is nice, isn’t it? But we don’t think it’s enough… we have nice plans for the future. Some people is already thinking of controlling their F2 audio player with bluetooth devices. Another good idea that will come soon playing streams from the Internet: Jamendo has already made a great progress and have a plugin almost ready and Egon Zastler also started working on last.fm.

And then what? How about streaming music from the Fonra 2.0 to another device? You store the music on your HardDrive in the fonera and it sends it to any laptop you want to listen to it from (sounds like an Apple application… hehehe)

So, here you have the first release of audiocli and also a short and small tutorial on how to use it. We will improve it for sure!

And this is only audio… More to come!

Download audiocli here: audiocli_0.1_fonera2_unsigned.tgz md5sum 0bb40eaff47e125706c3f8b22d7f5738

OktoPussy-2 is here: nice bugfixes and the very first AP that does meshing with OLPC!

Friday, January 30th, 2009

OktoPussy is making making good use of it’s name. Here it comes as OktoPussy-2 ‘reloaded’

In no time it has changed to adapt to the environment. This is the new stuff it brings for you:

  • Samba works on WAN! Oh yes…  You can finally connect the hard drive of your Fonera 2.0 from your home network! Some people were dying to have this
  • More and more languages! Can you speak Traditional Chinese, Dutch? Then the OktoPussy-2 is for you!
  • Hey! How about this? we like Windows too! (well, we don’t, but need to pretend). NTFS issues have been fixed so far. If you still experience trouble, go buy a new hard drive! :D
  • We have added a nice timer for when you reflash the fonera and get rid of OktoPussy-2 to get the next animal. OktoPussy-2 will say goodbye like a real gentleman. No need to wonder if the flashing is over or not, it will let you know!

Guys… we’re getting closer and closer to the final release. We’re stable, we have closed most bugs. We only have a few features more to add to the base firmware. Get ready for the opening to the world!

What wil be the animal for the first production release?!? Give us some suggestions if you want ;) we won’t listen anyway hahahaha

As a special present, we have 1 more thing for you. Well, some of you. The OLPC plugin: this makes the fonera be the first AP to allow OLPC devices to connect to it!! Oh yes! All OLPC owners should get a F2, the Marvell WiFi dongle and connect it to the  F2!! Will F2 become the main Internet access for millions of children over the World?
The files:

  • Image – md5sum
  • Fon package – use only with Tantor or OktoPussy
  • ddns plugin – with new languages (need to uninstall the previous version if installed)
  • OLPC plugin
  • FONBackup – The backup tool for your F2. Use it in combination with a hard drive and backup all you want. Win, Mac, Linux

Beware, OktoPussy inside

Friday, January 23rd, 2009

So here we are… later than expected but happy enough to present: OktoPussy, the new fon-ng firmware release for the Fonera 2.0

And so what?  Well dudes, we’ve got some nice tools for you. First of all, we are finally releasing a few plugins. Most of the work in this month’s been to clean up the system to accept the plugins, make some of them (we are releasing 2 today but we have 2 more in the oven), fix a few bugs you discovered in poor old Tantor and adding new features.

Here we go with the presentation, welcome our new rockstar! OktoPussy!

OktoPussy

OktoPussy represents the extendability of our firmware. It’s many arms resemble the plugins you will be able to install in it. It can use many arms at the same time, doing different tasks! It’s multimedia ;) (remember when this word was being use for the very first times for PCs? Now it’s come to the routers!)

The new features and fixes are the following:

  • Improved look and feel: added a few new buttons and icons
  • New status page. We still want to integrate more information and format it in a nicer way… but now you can see some traffic stats on the different interfaces. Tell us if you love the graphics like we do!
  • Added and fixed access to some services from the WAN interface: ftp now works and the webcam can also be accessed from the outside. Samba is the pending issue though, sorry windows lovers…
  • New languages! Hungarian is there (thanks bmpeter) and well… any others would also be there but we need you guys to translate! Here you can find what to translate…
  • We fixed the whitelisting system. Sorry, some of you reported you couldn’t sell passes from your devices. Too bad… but over!
  • There’s a button to reboot the device and one to reset it to factory defaults ;)
  • Added the option to enable/disable replying to pings on the WAN side.
  • Some internal working as I said… if you’re interested on what, check the svn logs.

And well, the first to arms of OktoPussy (official ones) are DDNS (DynDNS support) and, surprise, a FONBackup tool!

This Backup tool is still in development so, please, don’t use it as your main backup tool (although reliable, it’s still not as fast as we want it and you may end up jumping off a cliff… hehe). But it has very good points we want you guys to test:

  • First of all: it is SO EASY. No installation, no configuration (almost). Just open it, pick the Hard Drive or partition of the disk attached to the Fonera (if more than one) and the folder of your laptop you want to back up. THERE YOU GO! That’s it!
  • It is multiplatform. Of course! We’d never do Micro$oft only software. Use it in Windows, Mac and Linux! It’s Java ;)
  • It’s incremental: you change something and only that will be sent to the backup, not the whole directory.

The application uses HTTP to transfer the files, but we will change to FTP for the next release. This will boost the transfer speed from the current 450KB/s up to 1MB/s which is far better than the Time Capsule of Apple (estimated at 600MB/s on 802.11g transfers). Additionaly, we are working on improving the 2 slowest parts, the time lost between different files and the time to calculate the changes (Yes, it’s incremental backup!)

Please, test it and let us now if you find it useful and what would you change to improve it. We are always to listen in the IRC channel #fonosfera (irc.freenode.net), the mailing list  or here in the blog.

So, as promised, here you’ve got the links for everything we mentioned above. Ciao!

Firmware:

  • Bare image – md5sum 907b240308420b09b94812e1974f2ae0 (Valid for all versions using ssh or redboot, please check trac.fon.com and wiki.fon.com for instructions)
  • Signed image – This is the binary ready to be flashed using the web interface of Tantor (not working with older versions, sorry)

Plugins:

  • DynDNS plugin – it’s been signed by FON to ensure authenticity
  • FONBackup 0.1 – it’s NOT a plugin. It communicates with the Fonera2.0 OktoPussy without installing plugins to it :P

Once again, thanks to all the team, specially Blogic as always, and Cyrus, Albert and Victor too for their nice last minute intervention with FONBackup!

The fon-ng Firmware  Team

The first plugin is in Beta: Proxyredirector

Tuesday, January 13th, 2009

FrancoFON released a beta version of its first La Fonera 2.0 plugin. Proxyredirector allows you to redirect the traffic going through the La Fonera 2.0 to a proxy. You may choose to redirect the traffic coming from the private signal, the public one or both:

fon2_settings_plugins_proxy

fon2_config_plugins_proxy2-custom.png

* Yes the dashboard is now green if you are in developer mode (ssh access activated)

If you want to beta test the plugin you just have to make sure that you have the latest version of La Fonera 2.0 Firmware installed and a transparent proxy; you can install one on your own computer (i.e. squid for GNU/Linux). Then install the plugin from dashboard, the configuration will be in the ‘setings’ menu.

FrancoFON is always in search for new talents in many different fields, feel free to contact them!

Tantor, a nice Xmas present, isn’t it? – Fonera 2.0 Official Firmware Release!

Monday, December 22nd, 2008

That’s the name of the first official stable release for the Fonera 2.0: Tantor the Elefont. Why, because Tantor is a rock solid firmware; like an elephant, taking steps with no obstacle that will stop it.

Tantor the Elefont

We’ve added nice features, fixed most of the known bugs (not all, sorry) and set it ready to accept the nice coming plugins. We will take a short break for Xmas, we deserve it, believe me, and then will come back with great surprises. Because Tantor is our Santa present but in Spain, we also celebrate the coming of the Three Wise Men the 6th of December, so expect new nice things by then.

Back to Tantor the Elefont. This is what we added:

  • New interface for developers! Yes, we changed the look and feel a bit. Guys, you’re developers, not normal users, you need some distinction, don’t you? Check the new colours, ain’t them cool? And what’s that new image in the top left corner? Just for developers ;)
  • Translations and Automatic Language Detection. A small change that helps a lot! Our firmware comes out of the box with Spanish, English, French, German, Italian and… Basque! LOL!! Sorry, I needed a small wink to my mother language ;) Want to see it in other languages? Download the translation files from the svn and do the work! We will soon list what files need translation on the fonosfera wiki.
  • Sell passes, videos etc. Older versions (this was fixed in RC1) had problems with the whitelisting of some domains and not everything was working on the public side. Thanks for your reports!
  • New services added to the firewall for WAN access: you can now add ssh and web access from WAN. Now, forward the correct port of your broadband router to your fonera 2.0 and you can have full access to it from the Internet!
  • ssh access enabled by default: this is only for developers as well. You guys can’t complain!
  • Full integration with fon.com. The fonera 2.0 can now be considered a fully functional fonera! You can manage your SSID, passwrod etc from fon.com. Only the bandwidth limitation is not working but will be fixed very soon, don’t panic! Anyway, why limit how much you share? ;D
  • We made tons of bugfixes as well, but why bother you listing them? You can check them on http://trac.fonosfera.org/fon-ng/ if you are interested.

Trantor is not perfect, sure not. We have some bugs open:

  • *Ssh in Developer mode only works after rebooting* (I’m sure many will ask about this)
  • Setting the bandwidth limitation  from fon.com is not working yet (this is a server problem, not Trantor’s ;D)
  • Then Wi-Fi Wan mode work just fine but, when you’re connecting the Fonera 2.0 to another Fonera 2.0, you need to reboot after saving the changes. Not big deal, huh? How many of you have 2 Foneras 2.0? ;)
  • Samba access from WAN is not working. We couldn’t find why… too busy with other stuff. If you know why, let us know, if not, we will fix it soon! Promised!
  • Undetected bugs! (Ehr… yes, we have some, for sure, hehehe)
  • USB 1.1 devices still don’t work when connected directly to the Fonera 2.0 (not only that remember that plugin a USB 1.1 device or a full speed USB 2.0 device will block the USB port and you will need to reboot it). REMEMBER to use a USB 2.0 HUB between these devices and the Fonera 2.0, sorry. Well… we all want to plug more than one device on it so, why sorry? hehehe.

And what does this release mean?
So, this is it. Our new baby: solid, stable and usable. It’s the first release of a surely different generation of foneras. We already have open projects to support Bluetooth dongles (with even Internet connectivity through Bluetooth), home automation modules, jamendo (the Creative Commons music station), advanced firewall controls, Vuze (the superstar of the plugins… you’re gonna love this!), a youTube video uploader (we’re making an impressive interface for this too) etc.

Enjoy your Christmas present, have a nice time with your families (not too much hacking these days, OK? :P) and start well the new year. This is gonna be the fon-ng year!!!!

Fonera 2.0: A home automation device

Friday, December 19th, 2008

Miguel Ángel Díaz, Daniel Dionne and David Martín are enthusiasts computer engineering students from the Universidad Complutense of Madrid. As a year project they are working on the integration of a home automation protocol for the La Fonera 2.0

They can already control the lights of their home connected to La Fonera 2.0 wireless signal! They have a neat interface for the iphone and ipod-touch to do this:

It can actually work with any electrical device. They are using this X10 USB controller: CM11 marmitek

Their system will be totally modular, so it will be simple to add new functionalities and hardware support. They are also about to launch an independent web site for their project. It isn’t available as a plugin yet, but we will be will keep you updated on the progress.

Congratulations guys for what you have already achieved!
